A day after actor-BJP MP Kangana Ranaut criticised actor Kriti Sanon’s attire in the Raksha Bandhan ad of a jewellery brand, the actor reacted to the ongoing controversy by asking a pertinent question: “When will we stop telling women what to wear?”
On Monday evening, Kangana Ranaut took a potshot at Kriti Sanon’s Rakhi ad campaign, in which the actor was criticised on social media over the choice of her clothes worn. “Why would you tie your brother a rakhi in your bikini/undergarments?” she questioned, calling the campaign “intentionally creepy”.
In response to her critics, including Kangana Ranaut, Kriti Sanon shared a statement on her Instagram Stories.
“The essence of festivals is not in the clothes you wear, it is in the emotions and meaning you hold for the traditions…” she wrote, adding why women’s attire constantly invites societal scrutiny.
“Also, when will we stop telling women what to wear?? Ethnic fashion has evolved over the years, but still a woman’s respect for her culture is measured by just her clothes!! Culture & traditions are in her heart, not in her neckline!” Kriti Sanon wrote.
The Cocktail 2 actor also slammed a section of social media who had objected to her tying a rakhi to a dog.
“Rakshabandhan is a bond of protection. My sister and I tie rakhi to each other. We know we can protect each other no less than a brother would have. We pray for each other’s health, happiness & long life. And for us, this prayer and promise extends to our dogs too! After all, they are family,” she added.
The Controversy
In the jewellery advertisement, Kriti Sanon is seen celebrating Raksha Bandhan wearing a bralette-styled blouse with a cape and a draped skirt, something that did not sit well with a section of social media users. Before Kangana Ranaut, many Internet users criticised the actor over the choice of a ‘modern’ dress.
Kangana Ranaut’s Take On Kriti Sanon’s Ad Row
Taking a jibe at Kriti Sanon’s advertisment, Kangana Ranaut wrote on her Instagram Stories, “It’s a wonderful time to be a woman. Our closets are full of a variety of clothes, today’s woman is a global woman. From cocktail dresses to lehenga cholis, jeans to saris, bikinis to salwar kameez, from all the options that are available to us today, why would you tie your brother a rakhi in your bikini/undergarments? Where are all your styling options? Ha ha the advert looks intentionally creepy!”
In another public jibe, Kangana Ranaut named Taapsee Pannu, Rakhi Sawant, Sonu Sood and Ashutosh Rana for making passing comments on her family, politics and public conduct.
Ranaut made it clear that she would not take advice from people who are not as successful as her, calling them “failed, stupid and disgusting” and saying she had no interest in listening to anything they had to say.
