Japan govt approves record 122 trillion yen budget

The Japanese government on Friday approved a record budget for the upcoming fiscal year, aimed at funding higher defence outlays and rising social security costs amid persistent inflation. The budget for the fiscal year beginning April 2026 includes around ¥9 trillion for defence, as Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi seeks to fast-track Japan’s military modernisation against the backdrop of strained ties with China.
